The Duchess

autumn1

I went to see The Duchess with a friend yesterday.

I think Keira Knightley's performance as Georgina Spencer is okay, but there's no depth to her character (I'm never hugely convinced by Knightley, as I'm always very aware that she's acting). I also think the film has been spoilt by the hype and constant parallels between the Duke/Duchess and Charles/Diana (note the poster's tagline, ‘There were three people in her marrage').

On the plus side, Ralph Fiennes puts in a great performance as the repressed William; the set design, costumes and lighting are all gorgeous; and, as is so often the case with period dramas, there are a few shots of Bath (which caused a small ripple of delight in the cinema!).

All in all, a pleasant enough piece of period fluff to pass a couple of hours on a rainy Tuesday evening...
